Marching into Spring. ?? "Things are looking up!"

A good friend once suggested I try singing some of Tunstall's material. Not a perfect take, but it's got a certain umpf, so this one's for you.

"Black Horse & Cherry Tree," the song this Scottish singer-songwriter was discovered by, is probably easier to sing, but I've heard her hits once too often to get excited about trying them. I like this one's beat and lyrics. "A bird with an eye for anything shiny" sent me looking for images of Bower birds, collectors and nest builders that I've found fascinating since I first saw them on a nature show.

"Hold On" was written by Kate Victoria Tunstall, released on her third album Drastic Fantastic and numbers #55 on Rolling Stone's list of the 100 Best Songs of 2007 (wiki). Thanks for listening & watching, Snappers!

Not a perfect take?

Perfect takes are overrated ... if I waited for perfect takes, I wouldn't have a single recording on SingSnap!

Anyhooo ... I don't know this song, but I like it! Cool music and definitely better lyrics than Black Horse and a Cherry Tree (seriously, Mr Ed is really romantic in that other tune). You sang it excellently with your awesome personality and a little flair of drama too! =)

This sure is exotic; almost Persian flavour to the opening notes. New to me, and I love it. Great sing and great pics. Buks.

Thank you all so much for your kind comments.

Listening to the words of this song reminds me of it's antithesis, the great jazz classic "Throw it Away." The great Abbey Lincoln died this year so I embed:

Well, you know I advocate for K.T.T. I gather a third album is due shortly and the first single is out. Right now I'm listening to this track's original performance: even though I think it was supposed to be the rockin' hit from the second album (and I guess it was, otherwise it would not be here) and I like rockin' hits, I didn't feel as though it had pushed her further in her development as an artist and songwriter (she co-wrote this song.)

"Suddenly I See" is her "American Girl," the song so amazingly great that it sets a personal best, and while other early works may be real good, until her "Refugee" comes along, fans like me will have a nagging whisper "But, the first album was her best."

It happens and there are reasons for why it happens and there's nothing really wrong with that happening. I think the point is to cheer loudly when someone breaks through, as Petty did on "Damn the Torpedoes."

May I say that "Black Horse and the Cherry Tree" has more interesting lyrics, and my case is made in the title. These are fresh dream symbols for pop music. The cherry blossom painting is one of the essential subject matters in Asian painting, and I think the symbol represents a connection to family. I read the song as saying she is choosing Door Number 3 or Highway 61 and the potential the unknown holds over the conventional life that is available, and, she worries that it might be the wrong choice. If I'm right about that, it does provide an interesting contrast with this lyric's message.

Sorry about the cough. You sang this well.

And, oh yes, I know exactly what you mean about songs you've heard enough already.

A message of reckoning as the year winds up. Not a bad thing as the frenzy of holidays sweeps in.

Mind that cough ... perhaps some tea for you?

I like the Tunstall groove you've chosen, and the image to lyric fun is great when the writer provides. You always have a visual direction that satisfies. And the voice to back it up. Hope your nest is full of shiny mysteries this Xmas. *****Chris
