I would love to think of myself as a blues fado singer. You may ask what’s fado? It’s a style that could be translated as fate. It is a very somber melancholic way of singing about romance, life and doom. It is like a prayer that implores whispers or that could shift to a near shout. Fado blues is like lyrical fireworks. It celebrates the complexity and power of sexuality and pain. It is known for improvising, deconstructing, reinventing, rearranging and re-imagining a song. It is a painter’s masterpiece, a poet’s lament, a tour de force of feelings. Songs have a physical and spiritual language that resonates from the soul. It could be gauzy, gaudy, raunchy or nostalgic. It is a dialogue between the singer and the song. It is when the song becomes the singer and the singer becomes the song. It’s that inner space where we reside. It could be a cure or a curse for the blues. This is how I sing and this is what I sing. Music transcends barriers, age, gender, race and diverse visible socio-economic walls in our own very complex lives. I was born in Palermo, Sicily surrounded by music, beauty and art. It has forever made a lasting impression on my life. The multi cultural inputs of the island shaped me and consequently I have immersed myself in as many art forms all of my life. I’m in love with art and try to see the magnificence in all things. I enjoy beauty in all its forms and I apply myself to painting, sculpture, decoupage, crafting, jewelry designing, building miniature houses, doll making, decorating and anything in the creative realm of fantasy. For me, music is a form of expression I was accustomed to hear from a very early age. It was folkloric “fado” or the music of life. I could not imagine music and singing not being part of my life. It has always expressed the way I was feeling and the experiences I was going through. I feel that if I can’t convey the text of the song I am singing I might as well be reading a shopping list. I love to create worlds with my hands or through my songs. My favorite music is jazz and blues. My favorite books are Fountainhead and Gone with the Wind. My favorite singers are Al Jarreau and Billie Halliday. My best accomplishments are my longstanding love marriage, my three wonderful sons and my two precious grandchildren. "Go placidly amid the noise and haste, and remember what peace there may be in silence. As far as possible without surrender be on good terms with all persons. Speak your truth quietly and clearly; and listen to others, even the dull and the ignorant; they too have their story. Avoid loud and aggressive persons, they are vexations to the spirit. If you compare yourself with others, you may become vain and bitter; for always there will be greater and lesser persons than yourself. Enjoy your achievements as well as your plans. Keep interested in your own career, however humble; it is a real possession in the changing fortunes of time. Exercise caution in your business affairs; for the world is full of trickery. But let this not blind you to what virtue there is; many persons strive for high ideals; and everywhere life is full of heroism. Be yourself. Especially, do not feign affection. Neither be cynical about love; for in the face of all aridity and disenchantment it is as perennial as the grass. Take kindly the counsel of the years, gracefully surrendering the things of youth. Nurture strength of spirit to shield you in sudden misfortune. But do not distress yourself with dark imaginings. Many fears are born of fatigue and loneliness. Beyond a wholesome discipline, be gentle with yourself. You are a child of the universe, no less than the trees and the stars; you have a right to be here. And whether or not it is clear to you, no doubt the universe is unfolding as it should. Therefore be at peace with God, whatever you conceive Him to be, and whatever your labors and aspirations, in the noisy confusion of life keep peace with your soul. With all its sham, drudgery, and broken dreams, it is still a beautiful world. Be cheerful. Strive to be happy."
